Why should you care about the chemicals in home products?
Would you believe that regular use of cleaning sprays can have as much of an impact on respiratory health as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day? (1) 🤯 Whoa, right?
And that’s just the beginning. The list of excellent reasons to use nontoxiccleaning products is long.
🔬 Here are a few more…
· Some ingredients found in cleaners may be linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental issues allergies, irritation, burns, and poisonings.(2)
· Indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air.(3) Long-term exposure to chemicals inside our homes may be harmful to us and our families.
· Cleaning products aren’t regulated by the FDA. Cleaning product makers are not held to a safety standard and don’t have to list ingredients. While the Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting us from “unreasonable risks of injury or death,” it covers thousands of types of products and doesn’t have a huge staff, so it typically focuses on the most obvious, urgent dangers, such as leak-prone packaging or poorly wired electrical items.
· There are still thousands of chemicals in cleaning products that have never been tested for safety. When the Toxic Substance Control Act was passed in 1976, it grandfathered in thousands of unevaluated chemicals already in use. Because of this, all kinds of nasty ingredients could be lurking in your cleaning solutions and you’d never know it.
· Statistics show that common household cleaners give off fumes that can potentially increase the risk of children developing asthma. 1 in 12 school-aged kids have asthma. (4)
· Household cleaning supplies are one of the top five substances causing calls to the National Poison Control Center.
· Infants exposed in the womb to cleaning products used by their mothers may suffer lower birth weight, lower IQ, and wheezing and respiratory symptoms that may persist throughout childhood.(5)
· Some conventional cleaning products contain ingredients that are toxic, non-biodegradable, and from non-renewable resources like petroleum, so they harm the earth's ecosystems.
· Nurses who used disinfectants to clean surfaces at least once a week had a 24−32 percent increased risk of developing lung disease.(6)
🌍 You can see why we care so much about the chemicals in our home products!
